NYSC OSUN OBSERVES NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION DAY
As part of her cooperate social responsibility, the National Youth Service Corps has on Saturday observed a Nationwide sanitation cutting across all the local governments and states of the federation including FCT.
In line with the theme of the national exercise: '2021 NYSC Sanitation Day - Clean Environment/Good Hygiene: Panacea for Good Health and Long Life', the NYSC Osun State has through the Observation of the exercise made it clear that achieving public health and safety is a duty for all especially in reflection of the recent COVID-19 Pandemic.
The exercise was observed simultaneously in all the thirty local governments areas of the state and one area office.
At the flag off ceremony which took place at the Palace of the Olojudo of Ido-Osun, His Royal Highness Oba Adeen Adedapo Aderemi, the Director-General of NYSC Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim who was represented by the NYSC Osun State Coordinator, Mr Ayodele Adegoke has stated that the environmental sanitation is a call to duty for every member of the community as it will promote corporation and enhance community wellness. Adegoke further stated that the exercise is one of the several ways the scheme is giving back to the society and also exemplifying her motto of 'service and humility'.
According to him, the exercise will help to reduce diseases and hazards associated with unclean environment. He told those present that efforts must be made by all to ensure public health and well-being of the people through proper sensitisation of members of the community on the importance of proper hygiene, consumption of clean and safe food and water and minimising the spread of disease by avoiding the frequent touching of the eyes, nose and mouth and maintaining a clean environment at all times.
Furthermore, the Director-General commended the efforts of those who have participated in the exercise in the past, as the enormous impact of the program is not one to be forgotten so soon. He thanked the State Government, traditional rulers, community leaders, Staff of the scheme and Corps members for their selfless efforts and contributions to ensuring that people live in a healthy and safe environment.
The Director, Community Development Service and Special Projects, Alh. Abdulrazak Salawu in his remarks stated that the initiative came about as a result of the scheme's findings from the recently concluded NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers that most of the illnesses resulted from the unclean and unhealthy state of most of the rural communities hence the need for the scheme to take the initiative and become the leading light in showcasing the importance of keeping a clean and healthy environment.
Again, he charged all corps members present to remain resolute in committing themselves to national integration and development which is a major mandate of the scheme.
Meanwhile, the Olojudo of Ido-Osun, Oba Aderemi Adedapo, has lauded the scheme for taking such an initiative which according to him, is highly needed at times like this. He appreciated the Federal Government and all NYSC Generals for taking the lead.
" The NYSC is one of the oldest and functional institution in the country. Which has remain relevant since its establishment and we must therefore continue to support its activities", he added.
The Sanitation exercise which took place across all the 30 Local Governments areas recorded great success. In the Osogbo Local Government Area, the various CDS groups Sanitized various market places, media establishment like the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC), Montessori Schools as well as conventional ones were cleaned, streets, creeks and various areas that served as host to corps members were totally purified.
In Olorunda Local Government area, the exercise began right from the secretariat to Igbonna market area to various other locations. The exercise witnessed the full participation of corps members, NYSC Staff and community leaders and their members which made the exercise fruitful and impactful.
Other local governments covered for the exercise include: Ede North, Ede South, Orolu, Ayedire, Ola-Oluwa, Ejigbo, Irepodun, Iwo, Ilesa East and West, Oriade, Atakunmosa East and West, Obokun, Ikirun, Odo-Otin, Boripe, Boluwaduro, Ila, Ifedayo, Ife Central, East, South and North, Ife East Area Office, Ayedaade, Irewole and Isokan.
Indigenes of the State were indeed impressed with the exercise and called for the continuity of the scheme's grassroot initiative programs.
