DRUG ABUSE, A LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG YOUTHS- NDLEA

 

The Head of NDLEA on camp, Mr Abdulrauf Danjuma has told the 2021 Batch A corps members deployed to Osun State and those dislodged from Lagos, that the misuse of drugs can completely destroy a person economically, psychologically and physically and render them completely useless.

He made this known while sensitizing corps members on the dangers of drug abuse, on Thursday. 

He stated the differences between drug abuse, drug misuse and drug mismanagement.

 He emphasized that when the use of drugs is unnecessary, then it should not be taken, but that drugs should only be taken with a medical prescription.

Again, he highlighted the major cause of drug abuse to be peer pressure from friends as well as pressure encountered in the quest for survival, Ignorance, Environmental influence, Easy availability of the substances amongst others.

" Always find a way to stay away from negative thoughts and those things that make you remember your challenges", he added.

Next, he highlighted steps that can be taken to curb drug abuse which include: having the fear of God, learning from people's experience, setting clear goals for oneself, choosing one's friends carefully and seeking help or consulting a counsellor when necessary.

He concluded by making it clear that the NDLEA aside prosecuting drug peddlers and drug users, also offer guidance, counselling and rehabilitation to drug users and addicts.
