Gender Desk Officer Enlightens Corps Members On Gender Equality and Equity

The NYSC Osun State Gender Desk officer, Alhaja Salawu Kehinde has on Saturday sensitised the 2020 Batch B stream 1A Corps members on gender equality and equity at the multipurpose hall of the NYSC Osun State Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede.

According to her, the rate of gender inequality in Nigeria is high and requires a lot of intervention and sensitization to harness.

'We have 87% of uneducated women in the Northwest of Nigeria and it is a menace in the development of our country", she said.

She further stated that women rarely participate in Politics in Nigeria, which should have been a way of promoting equality and equity.

"There should always be gender equality and equity, corps members should understand that gender equity  comes prior to gender equality"

"Equal rights does not exist if there is no gender balance", she added.

In addition, she advised the Corps members to ensure that they educate their host community on the benefit of promoting gender equality and equity.

Alhaja Salawu further admonished the corps members that it is the role of both gender to carry out domestic chores and that they should ensure that they educate their girlchild and that women should also change their notion of believing that only men are good in Politics.

"Politics is for everyone and leadership knows no gender differences" she concluded.
