NO IS NO: RAPE IN 21ST CENTURY By NWALI SUNDAY JOHN
Rape is like cancer, it has no respect for age, sex or race. It starts from a spot and then gradually spreads to the entire body system. 'Without any invitation, a feeling of worthlessness creeps in. Rape is like a song track placed in repeat: the incidence keeps on happening long after it has happened. With each replay, the hands and the words turn to blades cutting and creating an indelible scar long after tissue healing may have taken place.'
I don't think that Nigeria
as a whole is doing enough to reduce the brazen attitude with which these
dastardly acts are committed. In 21st centrury (No to rape) is something that
is serious and should be handled with no mercy despite personality that are
involved.
Under the Penal Code, rape
is also when a man has sexual intercourse with a woman against her will,
without her consent, or with incorrectly obtained consent. Further, under this
law, sex with a girl under 14 years of age or who is of unsound mind is rape,
irrespective of whether there is consent. However, the Penal Code states that
sexual intercourse by a man with his wife, even if forced, is not rape.
The fact is, rape is
utterly commonplace in all our cultures. It is part of our everyday life, yet
we all act as if it`s something shocking and extraordinary whenever it hits the
headlines. We remain silent, and so we condone it. Until we have structures that frown on sexism, inequality, and a tradition that make it possible, are part of our dinner
table conversation with the next generation, it will continue. Is it polite and
comfortable to talk about it?
'NO MUST BE NO TO RAPE' to
protect our children we must talk to them about rape”
NO IS NO TO RAPE. Rape is not
what happens when a sports team beats another sports team by a wide margin. Rape
is not what happens when your electric bill is higher this month then it was
last month. Rape is when a person violates another person in the most
despicable, degrading way imaginable and among the myriad of terrible things
human can do to one another, rape is among the worst. I think more of casual.
Peace does not walk up to
our doorsteps and press calling bell! We have to go out there and search for
peace that SAYS NO TO RAPE. A man does not become a real man by showing his
physical domination over women. A man becomes a real man by loving, respecting
and protecting women.
Say No to Rape and No is
No!
