NYSC: 9 Corps Members to Repeat Service, 7 Others Punished by Extension in Osun
Nine members of National Youth Service Corps, 2019 Batch A' are to repeat a one-year mandatory service while six others have been punished by a 3-month extension for scorning the rules and regulations of the scheme in Osun State.
The State Coordinator NYSC, Mr. Ayodele Adegoke made the disclosure during the passing out parade of the year 2019 Batch 'A corps members in City Stadium, Osogbo.
According to him, a total of 2,300 successfully completed the service year and would be issued the Certificate of National Service while a total number of 9 absconded and 7 have their services extended for various misconduct which contravenes the provisions of the NYSC Act.
Explaining reasons for the punitive measure meted to the 16 corps members, the State Coordinator, Mr. Ayodele Adegoke said the affected corps members were investigated and found guilty.
On the other hand, Mr. Adegoke commended the philanthropic gesture of the six outstanding Corps Members, some of whom paid for external examinations of some school students, organised free coaching classes and purchased sanitary pad for girls among others.
In his farewell address, Mr. Adegoke explained that the corps members impacted the state significantly in ways including the provision of manpower in rural health centers and schools, as well as leading awareness campaigns for the eradication of lassa fever and other infectious diseases among others.
In his words, "I charge you to leverage on the skills acquired in the SAED programme during the service year, rather than waiting for white-collar jobs that were not available".
Declaring the Passing Out Parade close, the Osun State Governor, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola lauded the outgoing corps members for their contribution to the socio-economic development of the state in the last one year.
Oyetola who was represented by the deputy governor, Benedict Alabi reminded the participants that sustainable development was only possible in a stable polity.
He maintained that they had roles to play in achieving a stronger, more secured and prosperous nation, considering their youthful capacity.
