Red Cross Corps Members Sensitize the Public on Healthy Living
The Red Cross Community Development Service (CDS) group from Osogbo Local Government has sensitized the general public on the dividends of healthy living with the theme, “KNOW YOUR HEALTH STATUS”. The sensitization program held at the local government secretariat was complemented with the provision of free HIV screening for corps members, which is one of the aims and objectives of the group.
Speaking to the news men in an interview, the group president, Miss Omobolaji Awojobi disclosed the motivation behind the sensitization. She said, “Red Cross is a humanitarian and voluntary organization that has the well-being of humans at heart, and feels their pains as well”. She further enjoined that everyone should know their HIV status, as it is not only a sexually transmitted diseases, but by use of sharp objects or contact with blood or fluid from open wound, hence advising that prevention is better than cure.
Awojobi also urged the general public to be confident in walking to any medical centres and check their HIV status, as appropriate measures would be taken if there is an infection with the virus. She assured that confidentiality of the screening results is always the priority of any medical personnel.
In the same vein, the group field officer 1, Mr. Emmanuel Ozigi charged the corps members and the general public to always check their HIV status within an interval of three months. He further counseled that they must exhibit high sense of carefulness while handling casualties at emergency scenes, as they will be having first contact with casualties.He stressed that HIV virus opens the door for other viruses to get to the body system and attack the immune system making it weak.
