PUPILS ADVISED AGAINST UNDERAGE VOTING, VOTERS’ REGISTRATION
Pupils of St James Middle School 2, Ayetoro in Osogbo, the Osun state capital have been advised to shun underage voting and voters’ registration. They were advised by members of Independent National Electoral Commission Community Development Service group in a sensitization themed, VOTERS EDUCATION: SHUN UNDERAGE VOTING AND VOTER REGISTRATION at the school premises.
President of the group, Okoro Akpesiri explained that INEC is a government agency responsible for the conduct of credible, free and fair elections in the country which is why the group has conducted the exercise to educate the pupils against involving in electoral processes at their age.
Speaking at the event, Kola Fatai said only people who are 18 years and above are eligible to vote and be registered to vote, stating that it is a criminal offence for the pupils who are not up to the specified age to be involved in voting or voters registration.
He advised the pupils to not involve themselves in underage voting or voters’ registration no matter the pressure from parents, guardians, politicians or anyone at all, urging them to not be influenced by cash or kind as it is an offence punishable under the electoral law.
Kola concluded by encouraging the students to shun all forms of electoral violence ranging from thuggery, ballot snatching, over voting and other malpractices when they become old enough to participate in electoral process.
Other members present at the sensitization were, Bilikisu Ibrahim, Mary Akhere , Ibok Ufot , Aneikan Monday , Semiat Dolapo , to mention but a few.
