Managing Director of the Osun Waste Management Agency, Ogunbamiwo has said that the disposal of waste in the state is no longer free. He said this at the sensitization program held at the waste management office in Osogbo, the state capital by the Environmental Protection Sanitation Group of National Youth Service Corps.
Ogunbamiwo said people of the state are responsible for the disposal of their waste as it requires them to pay government owned or private owned waste disposal agencies for pickup of their waste bins. He said the act of dumping waste materials at the roadside or unapproved areas expecting OCLEAN trucks to come around and pick it up is prohibited, stating that anyone caught will be prosecuted.
According to him, communities are required to identify waste managers in their areas and get registered under them as it enables the waste managers to come pick the waste materials at the community specified.
He said that as part of the efforts of the government to keep the state clean, the agency will mark the World Environment Day scheduled for 5th of June while urging the group to participate effectively in the program.
On the plight of aquatic animals going into extinction as a result of waste deposited into water bodies, the managing director said the agency is in collaboration with the National Commission for Museum and Monuments to maintain all rivers and river channels and it is an offense for any individual to drop refuse or any waste material into rivers or water bodies.
He then reeled out the mandate of the agency as Waste management, Igi Iye Tree Planting, Biogas OClean Gas, OClean Gas Marshal, Highway Management, Mosquitoes Reduction Program, Plastic and Nylon Buy-Back program.
President of the CDS group, Ezeh Victor acknowledged the efforts of the agency for their effective sanitation work in the state while commending the management of the agency and promised the cooperation of the group in ensuring a cleaner and healthier state.
