YOUTH LEADERSHIP IN POLITICS; A CATALYST FOR CHANGE
YOUTH LEADERSHIP IN POLITICS; A
CATALYST FOR CHANGE
In Nigeria, the issue of entrenched old leaders and methods
is a significant challenge. The persistence of older political elites in power
has hindered progress and contributed to issues like corruption and economic
stagnation. Despite the potential for youth leadership to bring change,
barriers to entry in politics for young leaders remain, reflecting a broader
issue of political reform and generational transition.
We have over 50 entries already and I would not bore you
with a lengthy explanation or debate to think mine is better, but I've realised
it is more than a project, more than an article, it is a matter of urgent
attention and if we as a country continue like this, the coming generations
will count us as being part of the populace drove this nation to its doom.
If you would recall in 2020, Shina Peller admitted that the
youths have lost interest in Politics and they've taken to Entertainment and
other industries that are lucrative simply because we've had the same set of
men rule us for years and none of them are willing to leave when it's time.
Some even had their children take political positions just
to keep the pace running.
People like El Rufai, Saraki etc.
Imagine Atiku running for president for more than 3 decades,
since the days of SDP in 1993.
Our last election was the ice breaking moment and I had wish
the "Soro Soke" generation didn't back out so soon.
The youths participation in the 2023 General Election was
the highest since we have seen in years since our independence.
The chants of LP Eluuuuu Peeee ,75 Obi 76, Kererenke etc.
It was a chant for Fresh Air, A chant for newness.
Now, we never experienced this change but we want it,the
same change we wanted during Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan's Administration, we
wanted something else, we were close to it but alas, we are back to praying the
naira doesn't soak itself in yeast each night we go to sleep(yeast will make it
rise).
Nigeria will experience Ease when its Legislative Arms is
more or fresh minds and not old and arcade, running the country the same way
with absolutely nothing to show for.
The role of youth in shaping the future of Nigeria's
political landscape remains a subject of debate, as it is intertwined with the
need for political reform and addressing the issues associated with older
leadership.
Examples of countries where youth have changed their
political scene include the Arab Spring movements in various Middle Eastern
countries, where young people played a significant role in challenging
oppressive regimes. Additionally, movements like the "Not Too Young to
Run" campaign in Nigeria aimed to lower the age requirement for political
office, allowing more young leaders to participate in governance.
When a Young person comes in, we would experience;
Fresh Perspectives: Young leaders often bring new and
innovative ideas to the table, challenging the status quo and driving change
through their vision and creativity.
I know part of the reason Gen. Yakubu Gowon created more
states was to decentralised Biafra but it is seemingly a welcome idea years
later, it has helped in tackling with the regional issues better. With more
states comes more Representations in the government where people can Air their
opinions, generate revenues to fix their problems without waiting for the
regional government and Gen. Gowon was barely 40 then.
Increased Representation: Youth leaders can better represent
the concerns and aspirations of the younger population, ensuring their voices
are heard in the decision-making process.
Energy and Enthusiasm: The energy and enthusiasm of young
leaders can inspire and mobilize others, leading to more active civic
engagement and a focus on pressing issues.
How many of our leaders can do physical activities and not
faint?
Technological Proficiency: Youth are often more adept at
utilizing technology and social media to mobilize support and raise awareness,
making them effective advocates for change.
The world is now a global market but our leaders are still
busy streaming NTA with its bad output.
Passion and Energy: Youth leaders are often driven by
passion and energy, which can inspire others to get involved and take action in
various social, political, or environmental issues.
Empowerment: When young people are given opportunities to
lead and make decisions, it empowers them to take control of their future and
make a positive impact on their communities.
Advocacy and Awareness: Youth leaders can raise
awareness about important issues, mobilize support, and advocate for change through
various platforms and social media, reaching a wide audience.
Long-term Impact: Investing in youth leadership can
have a long-lasting impact, as young leaders are more likely to continue their
involvement in causes and issues throughout their lives.
Bridge to the Future: Youth leaders are the future
decision-makers, and their experiences in leadership roles can prepare them for
greater responsibilities as they grow older.
However, While youth leadership has the potential to drive
positive change, it can also face challenges, such as lack of experience and
wisdom. Some argue that a balance between youth and experience is essential for
effective governance.
To sum up, youth leadership will serve as a powerful force
for positive changes if we allow the youth lead.
There's no wrong in trying.
It is only wrong not to try.
