NEGATIVE IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN NIGERIA.

TECHNOLOGY

Technology has been evolving since the foundation of the world. According to Wikipedia, technology is defined as the making, modification, usage, and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems, methods of organization, in order to solve problems, achieve goals or perform specific tasks. These recent technologies have improved communications on educational system, educational interactions, educating and enlightening one another on academic, social and moral issues. Technology has proven to be convenient to people irrespective of their location. The negative impact of technology leads to over reliance, addiction, and obsession.

There are many positive and negative effects of technology on education, however, I will discuss briefly the negative impact of technology toward educational growth.
1. Huge expenditure: There are large costs involved in technology. Students, and sometimes teachers, can get hooked on the technology aspect, rather than the subject content. Advancement in the society has given birth to different kind of modern devices which are very costly and also require a lot of money for maintenance.
2. Major Source of Distraction: Learners are not studying with the help of these devices, but rather active on social media and many other things. This is how technology is becoming a huge distraction for the learners, exposing them to pornographic sites, exposing them to gaming, distracting them during learning hours, exposing them to moral corruption and lack of concentration/focus of attention to studies.
3. Misguided due to Wrong Information: Due to different informations on the internet, the learners are often misguided on how true an information is before been pass across which can severely harm the educational development.
4. Creates Enough Opportunities for Cheating: Cheating is illegal, but technology has made it easy with all the resources contained in it. There are many situations where the students can cheat very easily without getting caught, e.g. in an examination hall students can use their smartphones for cheating because smartphones are provided with Internet accessibility so it becomes easy for the students to find the answers with the help of the internet.
5. Waste of Time: Software and hardware devices are made by human beings, as humans can make errors, so the technology or devices made by human beings can also have some errors in it. These errors cause a loss of time. Problems like server issues and connectivity problems take a huge amount of time to get fixed, hence it disturbs the normal flow of teaching and causes frustration for both the teacher and the student. Wasting time due to these kinds of unnecessary problems is not advisable in any educational institution or in schools where every second is important for the students.
6. Loss of Information: This is one of the major problems of technology. Devices malfunction due to internal or external causes which leads to loss of vital informations.

CONCLUSION

It is true that technology brings innovation into our society but every development comes with its own negative impacts on education, it is undeniable that technology also has made the education system simple and flexible. Technology was designed for us to use, learn from, bridge our communication, improve our standard of living, and make our life easier to manage, and not to enslave or incapacitate us. Technology influences the current degeneracy of education, morality, criminality, and violence. In order to reduce these negative impacts, excessive usage should be discouraged.
