GENDER DISCRIMINATION IN THE WORKPLACE
The workplace is known to hold the highest percentage of Gender discrimination in the world. As it is, most occupations are classified under the slang Men's work/Job thus, making it almost impossible for the female race to participate. The female race has never been granted the access to participate in the main activities of the human race and this started since the beginning of civilization as females are seen as the weaker genes of the human race. Over the time, all forms of decisions have been made by the male race depriving the female race the right to voice their opinions as it is has been made fact that females are responsible only for breeding, house menial work and raising of good children. As the world grows, there have been brave females who stand up to the rough methods by which the human world has grown accustomed to, proving to the world that females and males can be classified as equals.
The saying "What a man can do, a woman can do better" has boosted the morals of most females to stand up to the world and make decisions, achieve their dreams and make efforts to try their dream jobs. Still, the world doesn't take into account the strength of the females as signs of discrimination can still be seen in our day to day activities especially in the workplace . Take for instance, females in the engineering faculty are underestimated everyday in the educational sector and the only way they are accepted is if they can prove that they have the brains and what it takes to be there. Under the work sector, many firms and organisations separate the work assigned to the females and the males as according to them, the females dont have what it takes to work in the male section.
Transportation can be used as an example under this discussion. It is surprising in the world to find a woman on the road with a vehicle, transporting people from place to place. It also took a while before the society came to accept that women can be allowed to drive any form of machine. And today it is still shocking to most people to find female drivers. A case was given on the Tribune newspaper on the 17th of June, 2021: 'The population of women transport workers is on the rise as commercial driving is now a viable option in the face of high-level unemployment and economic struggles in the country. KOLA MUHAMMED reports the experiences of these women transport operators, especially the tricycle riders popularly known as Marwa. 'https://tribuneonlineng.com/what-a-man-can-do-women-can-do-better/.
Under the Leadership aspect, the percentage of discrimination is almost as high the workplace. Here, taking politics as the mode of job, a case can be seen in the Harvard business review article written on the 1st of April, 2020; 'Although the majority of people at the top of organizations are men, studies show that it is actually women who have what it takes to effectively lead. So, rather than advising female executives to act more like men to get ahead, society would be better served by more male leaders trying to emulate women. There are seven big lessons they can learn from the opposite sex. Don’t lean in without the talent to back it up. Know your own limitations. Motivate through transformation. Put your people ahead of yourself. Don’t command; empathize. Focus on elevating others. And be humble.' https://hbr.org/2020/04/7-leadership-lessons-men-can-learn-from-women.
So far, the above case studies have been used to show the rate of gender discrimination done in the workplace. Solutions can be assigned by the government or the human rights association to fix this misconduct done by the society on the human race and a better economy can be created thereby improving the gender equality in the human race.
