MEDICAL GROUP SENSITIZES SCHOOL ON DRUG ABUSE


The Medical Development Group of Ilesa East Local Government Area, has carried out a sensitization on the adverse effects of drug abuse. 

The sensitization held on Thursday 25th November, 2021 at Hope Grammar School, Bolorunduro.

The sensitization which had in attendance over 300 students from both the junior and senior secondary school, was led by corps member Okafor Veronica .K, the president of the group and was supervised by the Local Government Inspector, Rev. Oyeniyi Sobalaje.

Corps member Owolabi Faith Omokolade enlightened the students on the adverse effects of drug abuse, letting them know what drug is all about and adverse effects of abusing drugs like cocaine, alcohol, tobacco, among others. 

He enlightened the students on some adverse effects such as mental disorder, social violence, armed robbery, lack of respect for elders, social miscreants known as area boys and girls. 

"There can also be distinct changes in the physical appearance & the general health of an addict which include emaciated and malnourished look, neglect of personal hygiene and unkempt appearance" he added.

He also stated that sometimes the social problem of substance abuse in most cases result in low, moderate, and high physical and psychological dependence and the emergence of future criminals and illiterates in the society.

"Other common adverse effects of some drugs like codeine include; constipation, euphoria, nausea, vomiting and urinary retention, among others." he concluded.

Other highlights of the sensitization was a question and answer session,  which was conducted by corps member Ebere Gentle Victor and distribution of   Exercise books and pens to the students.

The Principal and other Staff of the School appreciated the group for the sensitization which according to them, will go a long way in helping  the students make the right choices. They further encouraged the group to keep up the good work and ensure such enlightenment is replicated in other Schools in order to effectively curb the menace in the society. 

In her response, the President, on behalf of the group, gave special thanks to the NYSC Scheme for the  platform provided to impact knowledge to the students and society at large. She also appreciated the local government inspector for his continuous support.
