Fire Is Both A Friend And An Enemy - DSF Olajide
The representative of the Federal Fire Service Osun state Command , DSF Olajide Ademola has told the 2021 Batch A Stream II corps members that fire has the capacity to be both a friend and an enemy depending on how well it is used.
He made the statement at the NYSC Permanent Camp, Ede on Friday where he expounded to the corps members the duties of a fire fighter which is to combat fire and reduce damages.
Speaking on fire prevention, he advised that they should always ensure that all electrical appliances are turned off after use, replace all faulty appliances and also avoid the misuse of flammable substances.
While exposing measures to fire control he stated that, the first thing to do in an accident is to raise an alarm inorder to alert people of imminent danger, then further to make use of the fire extinguisher which comes in different forms and is used based on the class of fire outbreak.
He stated that fire outbreak occurs in five classes: the class A fire which involves solid materials, class B which involves flammable liquid materials and the class C fire which is caused by gases, the class D fire involves metals while the Class E fire which is caused by live electrical apparatus.
Mr Olajide explained the elements of fire stating that it comprises of heat, oxygen, and fuel. Again, he said that heat is a change in temperature, while oxygen in the case of air can ignite fire at 15% and as well fuel which could be in solid, liquid or gaseous forms.
Mr Olajide encouraged the corps members to use the knowledge they have acquired to help prevent or reduce fire outbreaks and as well as control it.
In the end, the corps members were taken through practical sessions of fire prevention through the use of fire blanket and the fire extinguisher.
