Do Not Prescribe Drugs for Yourselves- Danjuma

 

The Head of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on camp, Mr Abdulrauf Danjuma has on Tuesday advised the 2021 Batch A stream 2 corps members to desist from self medication.

Danjuma stressed that the act which is known as self medication is a dangerous act and could cause complications on the health of the user. 

He went further to lament the alarming increase in drug abuse in the country, purported mostly among the youths. He added that most crimes committed in the country today are mostly drug induced.

In his definition of drug, he stated that it is a substance which when taken into the body by any means affects the psychological function of the body. Adding to this, he stated that Drug abuse is the act of taking drugs with the wrong intentions.

Again, he advised Corps members to shun abusing drugs but to rather visit a medical practitioner when unwell. 

Speaking further, Mr. Danjuma took his time to define some basic concepts as relating to drugs such as drug misuse, drug mismanagement, self medication, amongst others, listing also the different classes of drugs such as Narcotics, Stimulant, Sedatives, Weed, Alcohol, Inhalants and so on.

Moreso, he acknowledged that not all health conditions require the use of drugs as some could require rest due to stress. He warned corps members against the use of illegal drugs as it is a punishable offense if caught.

He further stressed the factors that influence drug abuse such as: peer pressure, ignorance, easy availability of the drugs, adverts on certain drugs and so on. Mr Danjuma identified leanness, odour emanating from cigarettes smokers, high sugar level, high blood pressure as some of the effects of drug abuse.

In conclusion, he enjoined youths to learn from the experience of others, report anyone involved in drug trafficking to the NDLEA and as well be always ready to enlighten people on the use of drugs.
