NYSC: PROMOTING UNITY IN DIVERSITY AMONGST TODAY'S YOUTHS

Unity in Diversity is a concept which signifies unity among individual who have certain differences among them. These differences can be on the basis of culture, language, ideology, religion, sect, class, ethnicity .e.t.c. The need to teach the young people early on that in diversity, their is beauty and strength cannot be overemphasized.

This concept is very useful for a diversified society such as our country Nigeria that allows the development of trust and bonding among people.it is not enforced but freely adopted as people see it benefit and decide to take advantage of them, instead of holding grudges, resisting change and holding on to old stereotypes.

Nigeria is a plural society with thirty-six state defined by cultural and institutional diversities of the ethnic groups of various population and people practising three main religion (Christianity,Islam, & Traditional religion).it consists of three majority group.i.e.the Igbos,Yoruba,Hausa and the others are minorities groups .Also five hundred and twenty seven languages of which seven of them are extinct with 1150 dialect.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)  Scheme has since establishment contributed immensely to the development agenda of the nation. It was the need to look beyond the immediate present and to think of the future leadership of the country that necessitated the mobilisation of certain categories of our youths through the NYSC scheme, to emphasize the spirit of oneness and brotherhood of all Nigerians, irrespective of cultural or social background and understanding that the weakness of one state may be the strength of another or vice versa, for each tribes are uniquely different from the other.

The multi-tribal nature of Nigeria may put someone at a loss, especially when such tribe begin to display their unique culture, dialect.e.t.c. To this end,NYSC scheme has tends to provide better understanding of the beautiful and unified country called Nigeria.

  1. Nice write-up. That's the aim of the founding fathers of the scheme. But in recent times some of these ideologies are changing. I pray that God will keep the scheme going.
