TOWARDS RENDERING SELFLESS SERVICE By OMOROGBE AIZENOSA KERRY
Selflessness is a virtue, a rare one
that only a few posses in a world like ours. We search, await and plead for the
few who would at the mere voice of the word 'serve' would not take a flight to
avoid duty's call even at the absence of any reward in sight. The few who would
realize that been called to serve is a chance, a
privilege, a role they must partake and accept in order to share, demonstrate
uniqueness, strength, make a major change and most importantly, extend a
helping hand. They see the act of service as the most wanted opportunity to
contribute their own quarter to the growth, betterment and development of our
dear fatherland.
True selflessness, encompasses helping more than our own immediate
family; it includes all humanity. It is an uneasy path in which one must be
ready to live the life of others. Whose feelings, wants, demands, happiness,
desires and needs are of major concern to you than yours without wanting
anything in return. A choice to take responsibility, share in the pain, tears
and dance to the drums of their happiness. It means to care, show love, give,
and have the compassion to those persons you
have never known. Most times, we fail to consider the little things around us.
The little things like a hug, a smile, a listening ear, a hand to hold, a
shoulder to lean on and someone to talk to. Instead, we are busy with what we
can do for ourselves to get applauded by the ones who need us most. It takes nothing
than a cheerful heart to give that unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, toys and
textbooks to those in need of them. It is about sharing that one plate of food
with someone that has none to eat, it is about sharing those empty car seats
with those who are heading your direction, it is about that one tap that can
give water to a streamless community, it is about that empty room that can
house a homeless family. It is about that little thing you feel the next person
needs and should get.
Humanity would be endangered if selfless individuals are lost. It
would be a bitter and loveless society with no one to stand for the course of
love. It should not be a virtue shared only among our leaders, but with you and
i. It only demands a willing heart, a passionate and stretched hands to the
next person far and closer to you. The world has experienced the touch of
selfless individuals in the past and in our present days. Likes of Mother
Teresa, a roman catholic nun who devoted her life to serving the poor and
destitute around the world. She spent many years in Calcutta, India where she
founded the missionaries of charity, a religious congregation devoted to
helping those in needs. You and I can do
this and more.
The beauty of life is in love, the love that makes you want to give
your all and self. The world should know that a life of dedication is possible,
that a life inspired by love and service to humanity is possible and can be
lived and passed to our generation yet unborn.
