*OAU Teaching Hospital Trains Over 2300 Corps Members On Emergency First Aid*
Medical professionals from Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife had on Thursday trained the 2019 Batch C stream I corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede, Osun State on how to administer first aid to patients experiencing cardiac arrest.
The sensitization program which took place at the multipurpose hall, had the presence of the State Coordinator, Mr. Ayodele Adegoke, the Camp Director, Mrs. Okpalifo Obiageli, and other principal camp officials, among others.
Consultant Anaesthetist Dr. S.A. Olateju, from Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), Ile Ife who took the lecture explained that "cardiac arrest is sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing, and consciousness.
Furthermore, Dr. Olateju said, "it usually results from an electrical disturbance in the heart. It's not the same as a heart attack."
He noted that Life is precious and should be guided with care, for one must not be a medical practitioner before such a person saves a life.
Explaining the basic tips on how to take care of a cardiac arrest patient, Dr. Olateju listed; Mouth-to-mouth respiration, chest compression, mouth-to-nose respiration and transfusion of oxygenated blood.
He said, "Chains of survival entails, recognition and alertness for help, early CPR, post-resuscitation care, etc."
He also listed out the reversible causes of Cardio Pulmonary Arrest as; persistent vomit (Hypovolemia), toxin/drugs, electrocution, near drowning and lots more. Hence, based on the presence of a rescuer there is; witnessed and unwanted cardiac arrest and based on the location of the incident there is also; In-hospital and Out-hospital cardiac arrest.
Finally, he said that chest compressions can be done by Lay rescuer and an automated External Defibrillator used by an expert. A demonstration on how to do the chest compression exercise was done on a dummy patient in the presence of the corps members.
