A MAN WHO LIVES FOR HIMSELF IS A FAILURE
A MAN WHO LIVES FOR HIMSELF IS A FAILURE
No doubt, life is a choice and it’s in phases. Some choose to play by the rules and get whatever it is that they desire and contribute immensely for the benefit of humanity. While some try to maneuver their ways into fitting in their lives to gaining what the world is designed to offer, for their selfish interests; which could be power, pleasure and firm.
No man is born a failure. Real success is not rated based on the number of servants you have rather it’s based on the number of people you served or still serving. A successful man is one who is selfless to serving humanity. He puts the interest of the people first at heart before thinking of his so called selfish desires.
You will agree with me that the definition of ‘leader’ is the total opposite of those we have occupying top offices in the government. What we have today are bunch of self centered individuals who occupy the office of “Me, Myself, My family and I, Alone”. They no longer do the biddings of the people as expected of them which I think one of the primary objectives of electing a representative to occupy a particular position is to serve the people and be held accountable to the people and not the people turning their servants.
At this juncture, permit me to hit the nail on the head. One of the basic aim and objective of establishing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Scheme in the year 1973 was to promote the virtues of patriotism, industry, selfless service and self discipline among the youth of the nation which is key, to national development.
According to the state coordinator, Mr. Emmanuel Attah, in one of his welcome address of the 2018 batch ‘A’ corps members in the state of Osun, “The NYSC scheme is a preparatory ground for the future leaders of the country and a rallying point for mobilizing the youths of the nation towards the nationalistic enterprise of the socio-economic growth of our country through integrated rural development.”
From the above statement one can easily say that the one year mandatory service is therefore designed for discipline, self reliance and community development which are the pride of corps members to serving their fatherland. .
The Community Development Service (CDS) is a year round affair programme. It is through the CDS that corps members work with their local communities to improve and promote self reliance by systematically prospecting and executing development projects and programmes which impacts positively on the socio-economic of the host community.
Over the years, community development service has been one of the four cardinal points of the NYSC which creates the opportunity for corps members to contribute to the growth and development of their host communities. Though no doubt that, the CDS programme is faced with numerous constraints but yet not an obstacle to stopping some determined and zealous corps members who wants to create a change and add value to humanity and contributes to nation building.
It is worthy to note that over the years, since the inception of the scheme in 1973, corps members have done excellently well in contributing to the social, political and economic reform of the nation. These programmes have revolutionized our community in different sectors such as; health care delivery, information- communication, education, agriculture, infrastructure, technology, economic empowerment, poverty eradication, social services and above all national consciousness and socio-cultural regeneration.
You will also agree with me that the scheme can also be seen as a school of leadership. For instance, there are various cds groups and NYSC gives members the opportunity to head these groups by saddling them with responsibilities. For example, the Editorial CDS group. The president (Editor), gets to monitor all the day to day activities of NYSC and keep corps members abreast with relevant information. At this point, he learns how to manage, tolerate, and work with a group of people with divers character and abilities.
Though the NYSC certificate also known as the ‘Discharge Certificate’, is now one among the basic requirement needed for employment but then, the community development service you rendered to the people during that period you served is worth been proud off.
In conclusion, I’d like to charge corps members and other youth of our dear country to embrace community development service as though it’s their personal business and engage in personal projects. This will one day payoff. Mind you “leaders are not born, they are made”. Therefore, I charge you henceforth, to see this period of national youth service as a preparatory ground to show yourself approve and ready to be future leader who will be ready to serve and have the interest of the people at heart by engaging in community development services.
Always remember, it’s our service and our pride.
