BENEFITS AND DRAWBACKS OF REMOTE WORK

INTRODUCTION

In previous years, majority of companies either opposed or didn’t support the idea of remote work due to reasons like: “employees won’t put adequate time or effort into work, less result”, and so on. Nonetheless, the idea of remote work is here to stay and to overcome any obstacles that may arise. There was a time when the concept of remote employment was not feasible because technology for email, direct messaging, video chats, zoom calls was not yet developed. However, due to technological advancements, many organizations now routinely adopt remote work. Employees can now have face to face meetings and exchange information. Thanks to communication technology like video conferencing. Technology gives individuals the opportunity to complete various tasks at any location in the world. Furthermore, there are various benefits of remote work in which individuals and companies can consider before embarking on. Employees who work remotely have a better work-social life balance because they are able to maintain positive relationships and spend time with loved ones. It offers the chance to spend time alone and learn things about one’s self. It gives room for idea and creativity due to the possibility that inspiration may strike while one is in a familiar and comfortable setting. Also, individuals who work remotely are usually driven to carry out task effectively and produce efficient results. Therefore, these leads to high productivity which is of great benefit to the success of a company.The practice of remote work within companies fosters good mental health and wellbeing. It enables people to have their own space and organize things however they wish. Also, a remote worker has the ability to make certain decisions on their own which brings about quick decision making. In addition, working from home saves enough time and reduce the expense of numerous items like transportation, feeding and clothing.However, despite the many advantages of working from home, there are still certain drawbacks that an individual or company may experience. Employees who operate remotely may lack team spirit as a result of their inability to form relationships or connect with one another. Additionally, it might prevent people from exchanging ideas or listening to other’s opinions, which hinders improvement. Remote workers don’t have strong self-discipline because it is possible that they could become sidetracked by social media, family, entertainment, friends e.tc, which could hinder an organization’s productivity. Also, it may result in isolation because a person might spend all of his time alone, unable to attend informal gatherings with coworkers and engaging in social interactions. A person might be given a lot of tasks as a result of working from home, thereby leading to extended working hours.  These are pros and cons to working remotely that should be carefully considered before engaging in one.
