TOPIC: WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE A NATIVE NAME?
Name is a sociolinguistic
practice that offers information about one's ethnic origin and may have a
strong influence on the psychological development of the name bearer ( Essien
1996-2000).
The native name is expressed as
historically surnames evolved as a way to sort people into groups-by
occupation, place of origin, clan affiliation, patronage, parentage, adoption,
and even physical characteristics.
We all have a native name and a
lot of people don't know why the native name is given. That launches us to the
question, Why should you have a native name?
Hey, you! I am sure you have been
at one point or the other where someone got attracted to you or took notice of
you because of your native name and then asked you what tribe you hail from.
Here are some of my reasons why
you should have a native name or better still, give native names to your
children;
·
Your native name attracts people from the same
tribe as you. In other words, it gives a sense of identification.
·
At times, your native name attracts a certain
kind of favor to you when they find out you are from their tribe.
·
Your native name gives you a sense of belonging
when you are in the midst of people who are from your tribe.
·
Your native name tells about your background and
what kind of family you originate from. For example, my surname is “UDOUSO” and
it means “A CRAFTY PERSON”, my surname has a way of telling people that my
forefathers were craft men.
In conclusion, native names make
an individual unique in his or her tribe and identify a lot of personalities.
