THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EQUITY AND EQUALITY

 

The story of gender equality and equity which appears to be as old as time, has resurfaced in the global awareness, bringing new perspectives and a new generation of leaders and campaigners to the forefront. However, there is an essential distinction to be made; gender equality and gender equity are two phrases that are connected but have different meanings. While the words have a similar sound, their definitions and practical applications are not the same. Gender equality indicates that an individual's rights, duties, and opportunities are not defined by their biological sex.  While gender equity refers to equal treatment or treatment that is comparable in terms of rights, benefits, obligations, and opportunities for men and women. 

 

According to United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESDOC); “Gender equality, equality between men and women... does not mean that women and men must become equals, but it does mean that their rights, duties, and opportunities will not be limited by their gender. Gender equity refers to equal treatment of men and women based on their individual needs. Equal treatment or treatment that is different but regarded equivalent in terms of rights, benefits, obligations, and opportunities are examples of this.” Gender equity aims to level the playing field for both men and women. Gender equity does not equate one gender with another; rather, it aims to provide both genders with equal opportunities to overcome historical and societal obstacles by ensuring fairness and justice in resource distribution.
