Potential: Our Greatest Untapped Resource

Once upon a time in a city there was a boy by name Mark. He was a straight forward person. Mark was an average student. He decided to demonstrate his hidden potential when entered into the final year of graduation.

Mark approached his faculties and expressed his desire to participate in debate competition. One of the faculties told Mark, “From the starting of your academic year you have not participated in any debates and events. Now you need a lot of practice and it is very difficult for you to participate.” Mark replied to faculty, “Give me an opportunity. I’ll prove myself” The faculty refused his request.

Mark returned class and thought for a while at his desk. Mark’s classmates laughed at him over his intention to participate in debate competition. Mark ignored them. Mark approached senior faculty member Jack and expressed his desire to participate in debate competition. Jack initially refused. However, Jack was impressed with Mark’s initiative and interest and finally allowed him to participate in the competition.

Mark participated in competition and won second price. Students were surprised with Mark’s amazing performance. Jack was overwhelmed. Students enquired Jack, “Sir, what happened when Mark came to your office?” Jack replied, “Mark expressed his interest to participate in competition and I believed his potential and gave an opportunity. He also added that, “You need to take risk and trust and encourage others in life. That is what I did and finally Mark proved himself by winning with second position.”

Now What is potential?

These are latent qualities or abilities that may be developed and lead to future success or usefulness.

Untapped resources : available source of wealth that are not yet used or taken advantage of.

Potential may also be said to be hidden gifts in a man

And a lot of people has refused to make use of this virtue in them and these are some of the reasons:

Ignorance: not knowing self actualization is an option,Most people have been raised with a low ceiling of expectations for what they can become. They legitimately aren't aware of the potential they have or that they could pursue a more fulfilling life.

Procrastination: shift what can be done Now to another time.Procrastinating is an epidemic that needs to be tackled and taken out for good. It’s pretty easy to get distracted by something especially in the society that we live in which is flooded with content just waiting to be consumed

Lack of humility: not willing to learn.

Weak motivation

Focusing on the wrong qualities

Not willing to take risk

Until the above listed is looked into and adjusted by every individual potential can not be put to used and would remain untapped and this is the reason the grave remains the richest place because a lot of great potentials that where not taking advantage of are buried there.

Remember, knowing your personal ability and interests will benefit you more when choosing a job and when you are at work, since you will have a clear goal.

In conclusion, from the short story, Everyone has hidden potential. We need to believe, risk, spot, and encourage others so as to make them realize their potential.

Thanks
