Creating National Values Through Building a Well Reputable Belief System
National values are generally accepted beliefs about what is good, desirable and useful, or what is undesirable and unacceptable in a particular state and society. Examples of national values are: freedom, independence, peace, security, justice, democracy, healthy natural environment etc.
National values become commonly held ideas about what might be reasonable, acceptable as well as beneficial.
The Constitution of a nation reflects certain values that form the core of that political system. These values guide not only the government but also the citizens and the society at large.
National value may help in decision making as it tends help us to take rational decision based on the importance attached to a thing. Basic human values also promote good and positive relationship among people when they accept such societal norms, attitudes or ways of doing things.
The national value is worthy of emulation but a lot of factors had jeopardised the belief system which makes value more practicable.
I have come to realise that the most workable virtues to validate national values are dedication and sacrifice.
Dedication and Sacrifice as core values for nation building
Dedication is the hard and fictitious efforts inculcated to actualise a set goal, while Sacrifice is the act of giving out something so dear to you to achieve or get something more valuable than that.
These two values cannot be overlooked in building our nation especially at this present time where decency has no root in our country and among the youths. A time where unity is questioned and division is the anthem, a time where 'I, me and myself' is the watchword of everyone, a time as such as this. I call it a perilous time.
We shall not fold our hands to watch the nation totally degenerated or lose her nationhood. We are all builders and we urge you to embark on nation building.
Be dedicated, be a patriotic citizen. The concept of dedication cuts cross across ones sincerity and determination to make the anticipated goal work out. In respect to our nation, our individual sincerity, respect and determination towards the activities and policy of the nation will make our nation a better place.
Sacrifice is the second value that can necessitate the anticipated nation building. I shall be asking you some questions
To what extent, can you stand in for this nation?
How many times have you bought space on media to educate the masses on some strategic or principles to enhance good living in our nation?
It goes on and on like that but the answers aren't different from what I expected ,'who them help,' I can't spend my money for a country like this etc but do you often imagine what great people, patriotic personnels have done which you still benefit from? Talk of Nelson Mandela, Azikwi Nnamdi, Awolowo, Gowon remember how their lives was preferred to be taken than leaving Nigeria in the hands of the colonial master. Remember that their money, strength, lives, family were greatly risked and their efforts are still legacies we refer to.
What have you done to sacrifice, why are you finding it difficult to tolerate your brother from another religion, what is your contribution to the present situations of the nation.
You talk of insecurity, how have you sacrificed your time in educating your neighbors on the need for self security? To what length had you tried to ensure that you're area at least is secured or security conscious
Let us all be determined to build this nation and in our determination let us be sacrificial as the virtue of sacrifice is part of the values that necessitates national value.
