GENDER EQUALITY; An Initiative To Building A Better And Sustainable Nigeria.
Whenever the term “GENDER” is mentioned, many readily attribute it to the women folk who, in many societies, are challenged and often put in a disadvantaged position concerning the men. As a result, many women empowerment programs are being championed to cushion the effects of this subjugation on women.
One of the goals of the United Nation, goal 5, is to ‘Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’ by recommending ways to put women’s leadership and contribution at heart. Over 60% of the women in the economy work in the informal sector, earning less, saving less, and at greater risk of falling into poverty.
Therefore, gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. It is the absence of discrimination on the basis of a person’s sex (male or female) in opportunities, allocation of resources and benefits or access to services. It refers to fairness and justice in the distribution of benefits and responsibilities between women and men.
Across human history, women have been consistently excluded in decision making of the society. In governance and all social groups, women are systematically discriminated. And this allows the domination of few social groups in governance at the expense of others. This power structure caused further imbalance, marginalization, suffering and conflict (Tchouassi, 2012).
An inclusive, coordinated, multi-faceted approach is needed to achieve gender equality. These include:
Giving women and girls voice for global and national decision making.
Eradication of child marriage and sexual harassment.
Increasing access to education gender.
Raise aspiration of girls and their parents.
Empower mothers.
Encourage women into non-traditional vocations.
Additionally, goals are achieved when each division contributes its quota. However, male domination in all social endeavors with little or no contribution of the female gender will undermine the former’s ability and reduce the chances of process and development in most societies.
This means that apart from the fact that gender roles need to be recognized, society’s division of roles is intended to function for the complex whole.
This is achieved by equal contribution to society development and power to shape personal lives.
Women by the social settings carry out more responsibility that they are not paid for which constraint their capacity to fight for their rights. It is important to note that in other to attain equality in a developed country, both men and women have a specific role to play.
