Tackling Rape and Other Social Vices; Individual and Governmental Roles.

The human nature is known for diversity in ideologies, behaviours, culture and values. Each society is known for their values and beliefs which the moral codes is based upon.

However, despite the sacredness of these values, they are not completely observed by the whole members of the society. This leads to what we can term as social vice.

 Social vices are acts of indiscipline that are considered in a society as against the moral values and beliefs of the society. These differ with different communities, because the ideologies of these societies and also their beliefs differ and they have different takes on different issues.

MENACE OF SOCIAL VICES

Social vices have caused a lot of problems in our society. These acts of indiscipline have been deeply rooted in our society that they have cut across all sectors of our system, from the government, to the educational sector, to the religion sector and so on. It is the fundamental cause of most of the problems we now face in our country. The system is so much overwhelmed by social vices that it is almost impossible to go by a day and not hear report of one of these acts.

SOME COMMON SOCIAL VICES IN NIGERIA

Social vices as earlier said are cut across all parts of our system, thus we can find at least one of these acts around us. Examples of most common ones are;

 Corruption: this has been the major set back in our system where nobody can boast innocence of it. Almost every one engaged in it in one way or the other. It stand as the biggest hurdle in our country’s development.

 Cultism and Hooliganism: this acts have been ripping our society of bright minds of youth. Unfortunately, it is the major cause of the civil unrest and escalated insecurities we are now facing in our country. It open door to most of other indiscipline acts among the youth.

 Drug abuse: this is also on of the most common act of indiscipline in our community. It has been presented in such a way that even people that don’t participate in it are seen as anti-socials. This act is so common that even the underage participate in it. It is also an enhancer for other social vices.

Kidnapping: this act is currently the most rampant social vice in our country. It is now seen by some set of people as a means of livelihood. They kidnap for ransom and sometimes for rituals. This act is the escalator of insecurity in Nigeria.

Rape: this act is also one of social vices that wreck havoc in our society. It cut across all demographic groups, old, young, male and female. For this act anybody can be a victim, also the perpetrator can come from any where.

PROBABLE CAUSES OF SOCIAL VICES

Bad governance

Poor parenting

Peer pressure

Religion and political groups etc.

Taking rape as a study reference, it has some unique probable causes. They include;

Pornography

Indecent dressing

Drug abuse

Social media

Psychological problems etc.

TACKLING SOCIAL VICES

Governmental role:

The government should ensure increase in the security agencies, and they should designate a specified agency to tackle each act.

They should enact the laws and attach severe punishment to the perpetrators of those acts.

Also, they should design a proper curriculum in the educational sector to address these acts from the early stages of the citizens

Individual roles:

Parents should educate their children on the moral codes and values of their society.

Teachers in schools should also inculcate the act of discipline into the minds of their students.

Individuals should also try not to participate or abet the perpetrators of these acts.

Victims of these acts should be well taken care of, and also their perpetrators should be adequately punished for their crimes.

We must always remember that social vices has become a huge problem in our society and it is not to be left to a single party to solve. It is a collective responsibility of all of us, government and individuals to proffer a solution to these problems.

  1. Nice one.... How I wish this writeup could reach everyone in this country. We always blame the government for every bad occurrence in our society whereas, we all are guilty as much as they are. We need to change our approach in parenting, teaching and learning, in short, we need an overall restructuring. May God The Almighty help us all. Ameen
