SURROGACY: A CULTURAL OR SOCIETAL CONSTRAIN

Reproduction is a natural human function. People must give birth to children and bring them up in order for mankind to exist. Unfortunately, some couples are not able to conceive children. Despite all the medical progress, not all the problems of infertility can be resolved and some women are still not able to have babies of their own. In such cases, they can turn to surrogacy as the way out.

The term surrogacy generally refers to the practice of hiring a fertile woman who agrees to become impregnated, usually through donor insemination, and agrees ahead of time to transfer the ownership of the child to the infant biological father and his wife according to the terms of the contract signed before the woman becomes pregnant

The problem surrogate motherhood has provoked a lot of loud disputes. This is to say that so many people in our society do not agree with the idea of surrogacy. However, putting into consideration the fact that people may not want to adopt from the orphanage or maybe there is a decline in the number of children available for adoption, it is possible that many people will start to consider surrogacy as an alternative.

The society at some point may want to deny its level of contribution to encouraging surrogacy in our modern-day. But it is practically impossible to deny that. In our society today, some infertile women are not given the privilege to engage in certain activities and this is simply because, they have not given birth to children of their own. Some even suffer mockery from their co-woman and at this point, the dilemma drives them to a possible solution of surrogacy. Another reason why surrogacy is adopted most recently is because of the fact that people who are infertile and are in desperate need of a child would want to be sure of the baby’s bloodline (genetics). That is why they (infertile) choose surrogacy instead of adoption from the orphanage homes.

In conclusion, surrogacy shouldn’t be seen as a bad idea. I believe it’s an advanced study that has been put in place to give hope to infertile once. However, it is important to know that surrogacy is a contract that must be duly signed before the process starts; this is to avoid future conflicts of child’s ownership.

  1. For me, I think Surrogacy may not make sense for religious people. Even, some cultures too may not accept it too.

But, to an extent you've briefly given us a picture of surrogacy.

    Thank you!
