*Iragbiji Monarch Lectures 2019 Batch C Corps Members on Yoruba Culture*

Oba Abdur-Rasheed Ayotunde Olabomi (JP), the Aragbiji of Iragbiji has lectured corps members on the tradition and culture of the Yoruba with emphasis on Osun State.

He stated that Osun is situated in South Western part of Nigeria which is majorly inhabited by Yorubas and with an estimated population of about 4.6 million. The State also has 30  local government areas and is richly blessed in culture and tourism and is believed to be the place where all the Yoruba tribes originated from.

The Oba highlighted specific features of the Yoruba culture including the language, religion, clothing and general appearance of the Yoruba, language structure, music and dance, salutation and greeting, kinship titles, and leadership institutions present in Yoruba land.

He went further to educate participants of the educational aspects of the Yoruba tribe as participants were taught the numerals known as ònka and alphabets of the Yoruba people, and also informed of the advancement made by the Yorubas in arts, crafts, metal works, medicine, science and engineering even before the arrival of Europeans on the shores of Nigeria.

According to Oba Ayotunde, "the Yoruba people are the most hospitable ethnic group in the country and have played host to the NYSC for as long as the scheme has been in place.
"Yorubas take corps members as their sons and daughters because they have the belief that when they sow kindness,  their children will also reap kindness. They belief in the law of karma and therefore try to treat people the way they want to be treated" he said.
However,  he advised the corps members to be of good behaviour and respect the culture and taboos of the people of their host communities when they get out of the camp as they would stand to benefit from the community and impact positively on it. He also enjoined them to desist from dangerous adventures during the service year especially excursions to waterfalls and rivers because of the watersurge in recent times.
He concluded by showering royal blessings on them wishing them a hitchfree service year.
