GENERAL SENSITIZATION PUBLICITY
Child sexual abuse in Nigeria is an offence under several sections of chapter 21 of the country's criminal code. The age of consent is 18.
However, recent findings by the National Population Commission, with support from UNICEF and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on ‘Nigeria Violence Against Children’ revealed high prevalence of violence against children in Nigeria.
The study revealed that approximately six out of every 10 Nigerian children under the age of 18, experience some form of physical, emotional and sexual violence before the age of 18 years.
“One in two children experience physical violence, one in four girls and one in ten boys experience sexual violence, and one in six girls and one in five boys experience emotional violence. Only a little percent of the children who experience these violence receive support."
With respect to this, the corps members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, of Olorunda Local Government, Osun state, will be holding a rally against Child Sexual abuse on the 26th July, 2018 in the state capital, to speak on behalf of the innocent lives that have being victims of sexual abuse.
The upcoming event will involve all serving corps members in the local government marching from the Local Government Secretariat, through Igbona market, across the surrounding street and finally end at Freedom Park.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Local Government Inspector of Olorunda, Mr Adediran Johnson, urges corps members to turn out en masse as this will serve to sensitize the public and also help to curb the menace of Child Sexual Abuse in the community.
